Explore Cinematic Delights

The Shillong International Film Festival (SIFF) marks a significant cultural milestone for the state of Meghalaya, as the first edition of the festival is organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Government of Meghalaya in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India and National Film Development Corporation of India. Conceived as a celebration of cinema and storytelling, the festival seeks to position Shillong as a vibrant meeting ground for filmmakers, artists, students, and audiences from across the region and beyond.

At its heart, SIFF is a celebration of Meghalaya’s filmmakers, their creativity, resilience, and unique perspectives rooted in the landscapes and cultures of the state. Over the past decade, filmmakers from Meghalaya have increasingly found their voices in independent cinema, documentary filmmaking, and experimental storytelling. The festival recognises and honours this emerging movement by providing a platform where local filmmakers can showcase their work alongside national and international productions. Through screenings, discussions, and interactions, SIFF aims to foster dialogue between creators and audiences while highlighting the rich diversity of stories from the hills of Meghalaya.

A key goal of the festival is to nurture a strong cinema-going culture. In an age dominated by digital streaming and fragmented viewing experiences, SIFF emphasises the importance of collective viewing, the powerful experience of watching films together in a theatre. By curating a diverse programme of films, the festival hopes to inspire audiences to rediscover cinema as a shared cultural experience that encourages reflection, empathy, and conversation.

Equally central to the vision of SIFF is the encouragement of filmmaking as a creative pursuit, particularly among young people. The festival will host a Film Competition for Students, inviting aspiring filmmakers from schools and colleges to present their short films and visual stories. This competition aims to spark creativity, build confidence, and introduce students to the art and craft of filmmaking. By giving young filmmakers an opportunity to screen their work before an audience and interact with experienced professionals, SIFF hopes to cultivate the next generation of storytellers from Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.

The choice of Shillong as the home of the festival is itself deeply symbolic. Known for its rolling hills, pine forests, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant cultural life, Shillong provides a setting that is both inspiring and welcoming. Often referred to as the “Scotland of the East,” the city has long been a hub for music, literature, and the arts in Northeast India. Its cool climate, scenic landscapes, and lively creative community make it an ideal backdrop for a celebration of cinema.

Beyond its natural beauty, Shillong offers a unique cultural atmosphere where tradition and contemporary expression coexist. This spirit of creativity resonates strongly with the ethos of SIFF, which seeks to bring together filmmakers and audiences in a space where ideas, stories, and artistic visions can flourish.

The Shillong International Film Festival aspires to grow into a major cultural platform in the region, one that not only showcases films but also encourages dialogue, collaboration, and creative exploration. By celebrating Meghalaya’s filmmakers, nurturing young talent, and cultivating a culture of cinema appreciation, SIFF hopes to contribute meaningfully to the development of filmmaking in the state and across Northeast India.

In the years to come, the festival envisions Shillong becoming a destination for cinema lovers and filmmakers, where stories from the region meet the world, and where the magic of the big screen continues to inspire new voices and new visions.
